Pipes for Petrochemical Industry

Pipes for Petrochemical Industry

It is safe to say that the most important component of infrastructure in the developed world is the vast network of pipes used to transport various gases and liquids. The major uses of pipes are in the transport of water, sewage, steam and petroleum products from their original sources like steam plants, oil and gas wells, refineries, dams to the local distribution centers and then using the smaller more well spread out network of pipes that eventually transport these to the end consumer and points of consumption. There is another term for such pipelines which is “process piping” which refers to the entire systems of pipes that transports fluids like air, steam, water, chemicals, fuel etc. in and around an industrial infrastructure which is working in the production of goods and commodities or generation of power. These pipelines are generally manufactured from steel, copper, alloys or cast iron depending on the environment that they are installed in. Plastic is also being used nowadays and its use is growing in the hydrocarbon based transport lines and sewer systems. Reinforced concrete is also used in very large diameter transmission lines.

Most commonly used method of combining individual sections of pipes is by welding in case of iron, steel and alloy pipes and soldering in case of copper. Heat or glue is used in cases of plastic pipes. Use of bolted flanges and thread based connections are also abundant in pipes of smaller diameter.  Pipes that operate in low pressure systems, transporting non-hazardous materials like water or sewage, use joints that rely on friction like ball and spigot. Pipes for petro chemical industry are manufactured, assembled and maintained according to the preset regulations at the national or regional level and according to industry standards.  The most popular and abundantly used industrial code for transferring liquids is ASME B31.4. The popular code used for transportation of gases is B31.8. The ideal code for usage in process piping is ASME B31.3. Almost all types of pipes are buried underground after assembly but process pipes remain over ground.

Pipelines are the most safe method of transporting liquid and gases across states, nations and continents worldwide or even within and across manufacturing facilities. Since the type of such pipeline network is extensive, travels through adverse conditions and is also sometimes located in hostile environments, failures in this system do occur and most often in a very spectacular way which leads to extensive property damage and loss of life. Given the immense impact of various failures it is very important that your pipeline and parts vendor provides proper components and fittings required for this complex engineering task with inputs from various disciplines.

It is of utmost importance to prevent failures in pipelines.
